How To Apply For A Grant From HP
Ellen Davidson
|
Many corporations are taking an active interest in education with many focusing on the future for students in math and science studies. Hewlett-Packard currently offers programs to schools in the United States under its HP Technology for teaching Grant Initiative.
During the most recent grant year, the award to kindergarten through twelfth grade public schools was based on using technology to teach as opposed to teaching technology and schools in 39 states received the awards valued at least $30,000 per school. Additional grants are available for the following year to the schools that demonstrate successful completion of their current year’s use of the grant funds.
The application for the grant is available online and certain criteria must be met. The school in the United States and Puerto Rico must have classes for grades kindergarten through 12 and be open at least two years. The buildings must also have the physical and technical infrastructure to support the use of the internet in the classrooms of the five grant team recipients.
There also must be technical support staff available either in the building or within the school district to help maintain the equipment, which is part of the grant program. Additionally, administrative support for the program must be certified by the school. The five teachers who are to be part of the project must be full-time certified teachers and since the program is for using technology for teaching and not teaching technology, only one team member can be a technology instructor.
The schools selected to receive the HP grant will be given five Compaq tablet PCs, a multimedia projector, an HP digital camera, and HP PSC printer, scanner, copier and a $500 stipend for each teacher. All equipment and money will be sent to the school for distribution to the five teachers involved in the project.
The grant application should specify how the five team members will integrate technology into the teaching environment as its central theme or focus and how it can bring together the efforts of the teachers and the classroom to reach common goals and unified outcomes.
The five-teacher team should be formed to support the goal of the proposed technology integration. The team can be comprised of teachers from one grade level to bring together teachings of science, math and other subjects. The project should also be able to be repeated in subsequent years.
Conversely, period reporting to HP will be required by the team of teachers to indicate the progress of the program initiated by the grant. As part of the grant process, information on how the grant will be used is required, as well as a time table for reaching the various points within the time frame. Reports to HP will help track the timeliness of reaching the goals established for use of the grant.
